Thoughts of the Sand

                                            Kim Yu-ja

We reached the night,

reached the white sound.

Like a TV screen after the broadcast has ended,

the waves licked my pupils all through the night.

Things pooled in the darkness were not washed away—

lovers with their lights out,

children who washed ashore,

grains of sand tossing and turning beneath swaying rucksacks,

and the small feet, never once soiled with dirt, that must have walked.

The sand thinks about the footsteps.

When the waves read the thoughts of the sand,

feet and shoes think of different things, so the sand endlessly digs into that gap—

footprints without an owner.

As the wind slowly tears away my rustling forehead,

and the sea, the pine trees, and I all become a single dot,

like a child throwing off a schoolbag crying, "Mom,"

the chatter-filled home is much too far.

When we sit down and turn our loosened shoes upside down,

the thoughts of the sand fall out.
