성탄편지

 

                        이해인

 

 

친구여, 알고 계시지요?
사랑하는 그대에게
제가 드릴 성탄 선물은
오래 전부터
가슴에 별이 되어 박힌 예수님의 사랑
그 사랑 안에 꽃피고 열매 맺은
우정의 기쁨과 평화인 것을.

슬픈 이를 위로하고
미운 이를 용서하며
우리 모두 누군가의 집이 되어
등불을 밝히고 싶은 성탄절
잊었던 이름들을 기억하고
먼데 있는 이들을
가까이 불러들이며 문을 엽니다.

죄가 많아 숨고 싶은
우리의 가난한 부끄러움도
기도로 봉헌하며
하얀 성탄을 맞이해야겠지요?
자연의 파괴로 앓고 있는 지구와
구원을 갈망하는 인류에게
구세주로 오시는 예수님을
우리 다시 그대에게 드립니다

일상의 삶 안에서
새로이 태어나는 주님의 뜻을
우리도 성모님처럼
겸손히 받아 안기로 해요.
그동안 못다 부른 감사의 노래를
함께 부르기로 해요.

친구여, 알고 계시지요?
아기예수의 탄생과 함께
갓 태어난 기쁨과 희망이
제가 그대에게 드리는
아름다운 새해 선물인 것을

A Christmas Letter

My friend, do you know?

The Christmas gift I wish to give to you,

my beloved, is the love of Jesus

that has been embedded in my heart

like a star from long ago;

it is the joy and peace of our friendship

that has blossomed and borne fruit within that love.

 

On this Christmas,

when we wish to console the sad,

forgive those we resent,

and become a home for one another to light a lantern,

I remember names once forgotten and open the door,

calling those who are far away to come close.

 

Offering up in prayer even our humble shame,

born of many sins that make us want to hide—

should we not welcome a white Christmas thus?

To this Earth, suffering from the destruction of nature,

and to humanity, longing for salvation,

we give to you once again Jesus,

who comes as our Savior.

 

The will of the Lord, born anew within our daily lives—

let us, like the Virgin Mary,

embrace it with humility.

Let us sing together the songs of gratitude we have yet to finish.

 

My friend, do you know?

That along with the birth of the Baby Jesus,

this newborn joy and hope

is the beautiful New Year’s gift I offer to you.
