단호한 것들

 

                          정병근

 

 

나무는 서 있는 한 모습으로

나의 눈을 푸르게 길들이고

물은 흐르는 한 천성으로

내 귀를 바다에까지 열어 놓는다

 

발에 밟히면서 잘 움직거리지 않는 돌들

간혹, 천 길 낭떠러지로 내 걸음을 막는다

부디 거스르지 마라, 하찮은 맹세에도

입술 베이는 풀의 결기는 있다

 

보지 않아도 아무 산 그 어디엔

원추리 꽃 활짝 피어서

지금쯤 한 비바람 맞으며

단호하게 지고 있을 걸

 

서 있는 것들, 흔들리는 것들, 잘 움직이지 않는 것들,

환하게 피고 지는 것들

추호의 망설임도 한 점 미련도 없이

제 갈길 가는 것들

뚜벅뚜벅 걸어가는 것들

Resolute things

The tree, by its singular act of standing,

tames my eyes into a deep blue.

The water, by its innate nature of flowing,

opens my ears all the way to the sea.

 

Stones that do not move easily even when stepped upon,

at times, block my path at a thousand-foot cliff.

Do not defy them; even in a trivial oath,

there is the fierce spirit of grass that cuts the lips.

 

Though I do not see it, somewhere on some mountain,

the daylilies must be in full bloom,

facing the wind and rain right now,

falling with absolute resolution.

 

Things that stand, things that sway, things that move not,

things that brightly bloom and wither—

without a shred of hesitation or a single trace of regret,

those that go their own way,

walking steadily, step by firm step.
