별 

 

                    류시화

 

 

별은 어디서 반짝임을 얻는 걸까
별은 어떻게 진흙을 목숨으로 바꾸는 걸까
별은 왜 존재하는 걸까
과학자가 말했다, 그것은 원자들의 핵융합 때문이라고
목사가 말했다, 그것은 거부할 수 없는 하나님의 증거라고
점성학자가 말했다, 그것은 수레바퀴 같은 내 운명의 계시라고
시인은 말했다, 별은 내 눈물이라고
마지막으로 나는 신비주의자에게 가서 물었다
신비주의자는 별 따위는 아예 쳐다보지도 않았다
그는 뭉툭한 손가락으로 내 가슴을 툭툭 치며 말했다 차라리
네 안에 있는 별에나 관심을 가지라고

그 설명을 듣는 동안에
어느새 나는 나이를 먹었다
나는 더욱 알 수 없는 눈으로
별들을 바라본다

이제 내가 바라는 것은
인도의 어떤 노인처럼
명상할 때의 고요함과 빵 한 조각만으로
만족하는 것
내가 가장 싫어하는 것은 그 노인처럼
밤에 먼 하늘을 향해 앉아서
별들을 바라보는 것을 방해받는 일

Where do stars get their sparkle

How do stars turn mud into life

Why do stars exist

The scientist said, It's because of the nuclear fusion of atoms

The priest said, It's the irrefutable proof of God

The astrologer said, It's the revelation of my destiny, like the wheel of the cart

The poet said, The stars are my tears

Finally, I went to a mystic

and asked him, The mystic didn't even look at the stars at all

He tapped me on the chest with his blunt finger

and said, Be concerned with the star inside you.

 

While I listened to that explanation

I grew older

and I gazed at the

stars with even more inscrutable eyes.

 

Now all I want is

to be like some old man in India,

to have the silence of meditation and to be content

with just a piece of bread

What I hate most is to be disturbed, like that old man,

from sitting at night facing the distant sky and looking at the stars
