탄내에 관한 생각

 

                              유혜목

 

 

뭔가 타는 냄새를 나는 좋아한다. 

밥 타는 냄새, 나무 타는 냄새를 비롯해서 

애간장 타는 냄새에 이르기까지 

형이하학의 탄내로부터 형이상학적 탄내까지 골고루 좋아한다. 

애태우는 냄새일지라도 그 당장에는 고약하기 짝이 없으니 

세월이 지나게 되면 이것도 상당히 괜찮은 것이 된다.

 

탄내가 친근해지는 것은 이에서 흙 냄새가 묻어나기 때문이다. 

끝도 없이 용서해 줄 것 같은 어느 여인의 넉넉한 품이 느껴져서이다. 

냄새들에게 계급이 있다면 그중에서 탄내가 여왕 자리쯤 차지할 것이다. 

커피와 숭늉 냄새처럼 냄새 중에서 제일 오래 사랑받아 온 것도 이들 탄내 아닌가.

 

모두에게 사랑받는 장미향만 하더라도 온몸을 함빡 들어다 

허공 위로 활홀하게 올려놓을 줄은 알지만 

내 체중을 마지막까지 책임질 줄은 모른다.

그런데 탄내만은 나를 서서히 들어올렸다가

이윽고 고향마루에 앉혀주는 친절함을 갖고 있다.

Thoughts on the Smell of Burning

I like the smell of something burning.

From the smell of scorched rice to burning wood,

and even the smell of heart-burning anxiety,

I appreciate them all, from the physical burning scent to the metaphysical one.

Even if the smell of heart-burning anxiety is terribly unpleasant at the moment,

as time passes, it becomes something quite decent.

 

The reason the smell of burning becomes familiar is because it bears the scent of soil.

It is because I feel the generous embrace of a woman who seems to forgive endlessly.

If smells had a hierarchy, the smell of burning would surely claim the throne of the queen.

Is it not the smell of burning—like coffee and scorched rice water—that has been most loved among all scents?

 

Even the scent of a rose, loved by everyone, knows how to lift one’s entire body

in ecstasy into the air,

but it does not know how to take responsibility for my weight until the end.

However, the smell of burning has the kindness to lift me slowly,

and finally, seat me on the floor of my hometown home.
